Inclusion

Pen-y-Cwm Special School provides specialist educational provision as an integral part of the continuum of educational provision in Blaenau- Gwent. We aim to be inclusive in our practice by providing our learners with educational opportunities in their community mainstream school, Ebbw Fawr Learning Community or their local community.

At Pen-y-Cwm Special School we have an Inclusion Team of four teaching assistants who support some of our learners on weekly visits to their community mainstream primary or secondary school.

Pen-Y-Cwm Special School is co-located with Ebbw Fawr Learning Community which also affords us opportunities for our learners to join together to share experiences and learning.

Our visits to other schools are arranged to:

  • Help our learners maintain existing, as well as form new friendships with children and young people in their own community.

  • Provide additional opportunities and experiences for our learners by attending sessions not usually available within Pen-y-Cwm Special School.

Our learners’ inclusion is supported by Circle of Friends.

For other learners the Inclusion Team work with class staff to teach life skills in their community e.g. catching a bus, shopping , swimming and visiting places of interest.
